How to continue a healthy beer drinking habit as a new dad.

Life changes quite a bit when you have offspring, especially if you stick around to raise them. Less room for all of your cool stuff, less money for all of your cool secret stuff, and less time for all of your everything are all direct byproducts of sowing your seed.

Many guys throw in the towel. Not me, I decided I wasn’t going to let some zero year old kid, who can’t even stand up on his own, boss me around. I never thought much of it until dads from all over the land would ask me how I get away with enjoying beverages as much as I do, having children. I decided to throw a couple pointers out there that should help all of you new dads and soon-to-be dads.

They have taken a style growing in popularity and brought it to a new, twisted level. Most cookbooks are the type that sit on a shelf and collect dust until a recipe you once skimmed over when you first got the book comes to mind, and you quickly pull it down for that one meal. Meet Nick Johnson, Tröegs’ Regional Sales Manager and universal spreader of Tröegs love.

Philly Beer Scene: What were your plans in life before you got into the beer business?
Nick Johnson: I was either going to be a Sherpa mountain guide and carry out my life in the Himalayas helping people reach the summit of Mt. Everest or fulfill my lifelong dream of winning So You Think You Can Dance with my sick break dancing skills – but then I found beer.

PBS: How did you start working for Tröegs?
Nick: In college, I spent three years slinging kegs of Natty Ice into car trunks on a nightly basis at Gabler’s Beverage in beautiful Shippensburg, PA. After graduation, I fell into a job at local wholesaler selling beers like Coors, Rolling Rock and PBR. A friend in the beer industry told me Tröegs was going to hire a Philly rep, so I got a hold of Chris Trogner and went to the brewery to have a beer with him (no lie.). A few weeks later I was selling beer for an amazing craft brewery in Eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware. Read more…

About 11 years ago, a co-worker of mine, Bill, and I got into a conversation about beer. He asked me if I had ever visited what he described as a “bar in Philly that had all these beers.” I responded that I hadn’t. Up until that time I had tried all the beers that 99% of people were drinking. With rare exceptions, I did not think much of these beers, nor did I care about trying a few more. Two months later, Bill walked into my office and asked me if I checked that same place out. I told him, “No!” Bill walked closer to me as I was sitting at my desk, his eyes lit up and and he said, “You’ve got to go.” “OK,” I replied. I said to myself, “Let’s get this guy off my back and go.” I asked Bill the name of the establishment. He said, “MONK’S!” Read more…

This issue’s pairing comes out of Hidden Hills Dairy in Western PA and from the Trogner brothers in Harrisburg. JavaHead is a stout, a coffee beer brewed with actual beans that marries deliciously well with Hidden Hill’s Old Gold. Old Gold is an aged Gouda, and I affectionately assert aged Gouda’s are one of the “gateway drugs” of the real cheese world.
