With many of the upstart smaller breweries, size is a common roadblock and often a hindrance with different aspects of growth. Size is one of the main reasons you’ll find breweries that only serve their product on draft. A bottle and/or canning line is not only quite costly, but you have to have room for it and that room could be used for tank space which, depending on your view of things, is equally, if not more valuable.
In early August, I walked into my favorite bar and saw something I’d never seen before, The Fusion Tower. I sauntered over and had a sample of the beer after it went through the Fusion Chamber.
Organizing your Philly Beer Week schedule using the 2012 app.
Philadelphia is known as a great beer city and not many people dispute that little awesome bit of information. They’ll bust our chops about the sports teams, but we do that on our own! Right? Our claim to fame is that we have a history of having great beer. Add the distinction of having started the Beer Week phenomena and you can put a smile on your face and go have a drink with your friends.
More apps to help you find your favorite beers on the go!
Humans are basically still hunters and gathers, but we mainly gather food from the local grocery store and the hunt is mostly for craft beer. Thank God for smart phones and smart app developers because now beer hunting is almost easier than picking up take out at the local pizza shop. To help with the hunt, here are two apps to add to your smart phone of choice:
A new way to get your fill.
Traditional glass growlers are available in a variety of styles and colors. They’re cheap, easy to clean, but fragile. I’ve broken a couple of them since I always have one rolling around in the car. Fortunately, they were empty; otherwise, I might have shed a tear in my (spilled) beer. I may have broken my last growler, though. There’s a new growler in town and it’s made out of 18/8 food grade stainless steel. I suspect that makes it strong enough to bounce off the pavement, unlike my first glass growler which chipped and cracked. The Bräuler was designed by three guys who share a love of beer: Harvey Claussen, an engineer; James Andrew, an Industrial Designer; and Christian DeBenedetti, a writer. Read more…
Innovations to keep your beers (or wine) safe when traveling.
If you’re traveling with beer (doesn’t everyone carry some craft beer home?), here are some alternatives to the bubble wrap/smelly sock and plastic bag systems currently in vogue: Read more…
Do not attempt a keg stand on one of these…
Philadelphia currently has several active breweries and should have even more by the end of the year. This helps to solidify our reputation as the best damned beer city in America and, hopefully, gives us increased access to small batch beers. Yum!
Starting a brewery is not the easiest or cheapest thing in the world. Apparently, it is also not a way to get rich and very few brewers start out with enough capital. Making your own or repurposing equipment is a good way to make that working capital go a bit further. Keg inventory is an expense that may have a solution. Read more…
Another convenient way to get your fill at Citizens Bank Park.
I worked for a computer company in my earlier life. I was technologically savvy but thought Facebook was where the police stored the mugshots, Myspace was my bedroom and Twitter was what birds did. Well, I can tell you it is possible to teach an old dog new tricks, figuratively speaking that is. I use Twitter as a diversion with practical uses. It replaces text messages and allows real time information exchange. I can get emergency information, recommendations to a restaurant, get a laugh, and even a cold beer delivered to my seat…if I’m sitting sections 101-107, 201-11 or 301-310 at Citizens Bank Park. This beer dream come true fills your cup in 3 seconds flat.
We are finally into spring and I’m officially tired of winter. I’m throwing in the gloves, hanging up my snow shovel, and storing my snow brush until next year. I’m chilled to the bone, my fingers are cold, and having short hair makes my ears numb. Yeah, cold weather sucks and I’m bitching about it. Don’t think I’m getting grumpy in my old age (I’ve been grumpy my entire life!), because winter definitely has its advantages… snow days, the emergency run for bread and milk and watching news coverage of people going to Wawa for coffee. Don’t let me forget drinking in a nice warm bar!
Yes, winter has many pluses. My favorites are Winter Warmers, English Barleywines and Eisbocks. I firmly believe the antidote to winter is a comfortable stool, a cozy bar, and a great beer. The thing I like best about winter is that it goes away and brings us baseball weather. Nothing like getting Phillies tickets in my grubby little hands to make the doldrums go south to Clearwater for spring training. Watching Phils baseball at the ballpark is my cup of tea. Actually, it’s my cup of beer. Read more…
