Letter-from-the-editor

What a wonderful road it’s been… Philly Beer Scene was started by four friends, each with a deep passion for beer. When we first began, we had a pie-in-the-sky vision of what this magazine could become. But we all knew that with the time, dedication, and work, eventually the day would come that the torch would be carried by only a few initial founders, as each one of us had our own businesses and priorities outside the publication.

We hope everyone had a safe and happy New Year! It is hard to believe that in no time at all it will be Valentine’s Day, which is why we thought it was all too appropriate to provide you with a guide to some of the best bottle shops and BYOs in and around the city; for dinner with your significant other, or just a night out on the town with friends and family.

It seems every time it comes around for me to write this,it revolves around a new year.Last time, it was the beginning of year three of the magazine,a feat that seemed to come incredibly quick. This time around, we’re finishing out 2011 and making plans for 2012; anticipating the mystery of what it has in store. I have to say, 2011 was quite the year. Philadelphia, as a whole, finally seemed to put itself on the map in regards to getting the respect it rightfully deserves. Accolades were given to this great city in a vast array of national magazines, including being named the most cultural city in America by Travel + Leisure. That title was especially awesome, as our craft beer culture was highly touted in that article. It goes to show the positive effect beer can have on a society. It also makes you wonder how this rapidly growing recognition and appreciation for craft beer will affect the industry in the coming year. 2012 could truly become a Mecca-type year for the craft beer movement. Ladies and gentlemen, beer fans throughout the scene, let me introduce my wife –Lindsay Harner!

Some of you may have noticed my absence from the scene the last few months as Lindsay and I prepared for our marital celebration at Victory Brewing Co. Planning a wedding is definitely hard work, but it was well worth it. I have to thank Victory for throwing us an incredible bash! The beer was flowing from the taps all night, dinner was filled with awesome BBQ, the service was incredible (no one had an empty glass), and they even took the time to bake a 3-tier beer-made wedding cake appropriately decorated with hops. We couldn’t have asked for a better venue! Read more…

Philly Beer Week 2011 came and went just as fast as we thought it would, and as always, it certainly lived up to expectations. Now, summer is winding down, but with that, it is ushering in another one of our favorite celebrations of the year– Oktoberfest. Read more…

Three homebrew shops, four breweries (which will double by the end of the year), a handful of distributors and bottles shops, and dozens of new bars have opened since we started two years ago. Going into our third year, it’s mind-blowing to look back and see how much the scene has grown over this time. It almost seems like a new bar is opening every week and there’s at least a rumor a month of a new brewery opening. Read more…

For a beer lover, the change of beer styles is as inevitable as the changing of a season. We find ourselves now shifting from the heavy beers of winter to the sessionable, light styles of spring. I am pleasantly surprised to discover that somehow in my exploration as a craft beer lover, my palate shifted from the more robust, higher ABVs and I am now exploring a new appreciation for some of the lighter and more refreshing beers offered in the area.

We decided that with the impending New Year should come a change of pace, and that now would be a great time to add a new face to the “Letter From” section
of the magazine. I had heard that Neil and Mat get a lot of questions asking who I am since I started participating in the “Tasting Room,” so I figured this would be a
great chance to introduce myself. Read more…

A few weeks ago, I took a much needed break from work and life in general by road tripping with my Mom from my home in Feasterville, PA to the Great American Beer Festival (GABF) in Denver, CO. The plan was that along the way we would stop at every brewery that was open and eat regional specialties that have been featured on TV shows like “Man vs. Food” and “Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives.” Read more…
