Two Philadelphian Beer Lovers’ Weeklong Journey Through Colorado.

There’s no better way to end a vacation than sitting at the bar at Falling Rock with a beer that you can’t get your hands on in Philly. My choice: Big Sky Moose Drool Brown. The clock rushing to count down the minutes seconds to September’s GABF — 064 days 20 hours 55 minutes 43.4 seconds — reminds me just how serious this state is about BEER. My fiancé and I spent one week traveling around to four towns and sampling the beers of six craft breweries. Here’s where we went and the brews we recommend:

Making a day out of the trip to the Big Apple.

Usually on a trip to New York, I hitch a train from Trenton Station just to avoid the traffic (and Jersey drivers). On this particular occasion, since I was going to be in New York for the weekend, I decided to take off on a Friday and take my time driving so that I could stop at some of North Jersey’s better beer destinations.

Brews in the heart of Amish Country.

With Spring in the air, there’s nothing like getting out of the house to travel on country back roads and visit the neighboring locale of Lancaster County. While Lancaster County is famous for its Amish community, beautiful, rolling countryside, farmers markets and Shoofly Pies, beer lovers will find much to delight in, in what is known as Pennsylvania Dutch Country. Exploring the Beer Bars of New York City

While craft beer may not be the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of NYC, the city’s craft beer presence is growing and makes for a quick and easy weekend trip out of Philly. Whether you choose to hit the road or ride the rails, an hour and a half north you’ll find a city full of great beer bars waiting. If you’re arriving by train into Penn Station, your first stop is just a few blocks east where you’ll find two fabulous craft beer bars located just three blocks apart. The Ginger Man, on East 36th St. is an upscale bar with an old school feel that features an incredible 70 beers on tap as well as 160 bottles! With high ceilings, dark wood, old bank-style lamps on the bar and a cozy nook in the back with couches, sitting down to a beer here is truly a pleasure. Stroll three blocks south to East 33rd and you’ll find the phenomenon that is Rattle’n’Hum Bar. With 40 craft beers on tap, a separate cask bar in the back, an extensive bottle list spanning the country and globe and regular brewery nights, Rattle’n’Hum is a pint of beer heaven. The impressive tap list, recently featured The Bruery’s Two Turtle Doves, Pretty Things’ Babayaga, 21st Amendment’s Monk’s Blood and the Brew Dog/Stone Bashah! Read more…

Local brew pubs in one of the most dynamic and exciting cities in the world.

Let me lay down the facts: In Turkey, an empire ruled by tea and Raki, good craft beers are hard to come by. A huge majority of the market — over 80% — is ruled by macro-brewing giant Efes Beverage Group, which aside from its own namesake beers also has contracts to brew Tuborg, Foster’s and Miller, to name a few. As a bartender told me, “Turks drink a lot of beer, but they don’t have a beer culture.” There are just a handful of microbreweries in Turkey, mostly based on an American or German brewpub model.

Despite being the most incredible beer city in the country, every once in a while a brief change in scenery can be nice. Walking the streets of Philadelphia in the fall is always great, but you can’t really beat a beautiful fall weekend in Upstate New York. It may not be able to compete on a beer level, but the Cooperstown area of Upstate New York definitely has plenty to offer and a gorgeous country atmosphere to go with it. Just imagine sitting outside on the edge of a lake, an abundance of trees alive with a vast array of autumn colors, birds chirping, no sounds of traffic or over population, and the best part cooler filled with cans of Butternuts Pork Slap Pale Ale. That is what a beer weekend in Upstate New York is like.

Taking a look at British craft brewing.

Sean Franklin, head brewer at Rooster’s in North Yorkshire speaks passionately about hops. Hops are at the heart of Rooster’s ales with varieties used from Europe, the US and New Zealand and Sean’s enthusiasm captures the spirit of the UK craft brewing scene. It’s a scene that grows more and more exciting each year. Micro breweries are opening at the rate of one a week while others expand to meet demand.
